Suspect Handed Over To The United States For Prosecution
Ottawa- An American man accused of sexually assaulting children has been deported from Canada and turned over to the United States for criminal prosecution.
Matthew Bynum formerly of Denver Colorado was handed over to US Police and Border authorities on Wednesday, after a joint US and Canada based investigation into his sex crimes.
Bynum was formally deported and handed over to Larimer County Sheriffs officials, who traveled to Canada from Colorado to take Bynum into custody.
“The Canadian Government is committed to its zero tolerance policy toward sexual abusers and fugitives from justice,” said Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day.
Colorado State authorities have been in pursuit of Matthew Bynum since October of 2007 when they were alerted to his activities with underage girls he was in contact with over the Internet.
He would strike up online friendships, then travel to Larimer County to meet the girls, where he would sexually assault them.
When the authorities started to investigate, Bynum fled to Canada.
Bynum faced five counts of sexual assault on children, two counts of contributing to the delinquency of minors, and one count of Internet Child luring.
