Swastika kids' health at risk, social worker testifies
A social worker testified Thursday that there were health concerns for two young children beyond the white supremacist teachings they were allegedly being given by their parents. The social worker said that the younger child would be kept in a dirty diaper all day long and that his father would ignore the children to watch television or talk to friends over the Internet.
The social worker also testified that the parents, who are now separated, showed up at their child's school smelling of alcohol, according to school officials.
Both parents have asked for sole custody of the children. The girl's biological father says he doesn't want the stepfather to have custody of either child.
The Winnipeg case has come to national attention after it was heard that one of the children, a girl, once arrived at school with a swastika written on her body.
The girl and her younger brother were taken from the family by provincial child services officials last year after the schooling incident.
Social workers have testified that the parents taught the girl to hate black people and other minorities.
The lawyer for the father of the young boy has argued that his client's racist beliefs are not a child custody issue. The mother has argued the same thing.
Under Manitoba law, neither the witnesses nor the family can be identified.

LEBANON — During the not quite seven months of Zariyah Mitchell's life, she was scalded, bitten, choked, and had bruises and cuts all over her body. She died Friday.
"She spent a very tortured six months," Lebanon County District Attorney Dave Arnold said at a news conference this afternoon.
On Friday night, Zariyah's father, Kevin Mitchell, was arrested on assault charges. This morning, he was charged with homicide. Arnold said if the law allows it, he will seek the death penalty. "Whatever the maximum penalty the law allows us to seek, we will ask for," Arnold said.
Arnold said there are still unanswered questions about how Zariyah died and why nobody reported abuse or neglect. The investigation is ongoing and no decision has been made whether Zariyah's mother, Miriam Nebot, will be charged.
But he said he decided to file murder charges after the pathologist who did the autopsy said Zariyah's death was definitely a homicide.
Mitchell and Nebot brought Zariyah to Good Samaritan Hospital on Friday. Arnold said he doesn't know if Zariyah was already dead when she arrived at the hospital or whether she died in the hospital.
Arnold said Friday was the first time Zariyah's condition was reported to child welfare or law enforcement authorities. He wouldn't comment on whether Zariyah had ever been seen by medical personnel before her death.
According to court documents, Mitchell told police he once decided not to take Zariyah to a doctor because friends told him the child could be taken from him if he did.
"We're going to look at every possible scenario as to how the situation got to this point," Arnold said.

Staunton Police are investigating what appears to be a murder-suicide, according to our sister station WHSV Harrisonburg.
Police say the shooting happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday (5/26) in the 600 Block of Grubert St. in Staunton. According to Police, 24-year-old Daniel Knight shot and killed his wife, 23-year-old Amber Knight before shooting himself.
Police were called at 8:36 p.m. Tuesday night by family who wanted a welfare check done at the home at 617 Grubert Avenue. That's when police discovered the bodies. Police believe the shootings happened Tuesday night but neighbors say they heard gunshots late Monday (5/25) or early Tuesday (5/26).
In the hours before the shooting, Daniel Knight posted several messages on his My Space page indicating that his death was near. Police report no history of violence at the home.
Neighbors on Grubert Avenue describe Daniel and Amber Knight as quiet people. The last thing they say they expected to hear was two loud booms.
Albert Whisman, a neighbor, says, "It sounded like 'boom boom.'"
When police went to see what happened, they found two bodies laying close together in the living room. Staunton police used force to enter the house.
The house was locked up with the blinds drawn, so the only sign of anything out of the ordinary were medical gloves lying on the ground.
Police say Knight used a high powered rifle to carry out the murder-suicide. While investigators wouldn't add much, they do say it was a terrible scene.
Officer Lisa Klein, with the Staunton Police Department, says the events are tragic.
Visibly shaken landlords went inside the home Wednesday, armed with garbage bags and towels. They made no comment.
Neighbors say they can't believe what happened.
Police say autopsies are being performed on Daniel and Amber's bodies in Roanoke.
